Roads and infrastructure

Areas of concern

Air pollution

  • Weybridge town centre has been an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) since November 2008 due to annual mean levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • AQMA covers sections of Balfour Road, Church Street, High Street, and Monument Hill (forming the A317 through town centre)
  • Greatest contributor to air pollution is road transport

Congestion

  • A317 is a key A road for local journeys
  • A317 also forms part of the Major Road Network (MRN)
  • The dual nature of this route is a likely reason for the congestion issues

Cycle route provision

  • Existing cycle provision in Weybridge has gaps
  • Some routes terminate prior to the town centre

Pedestrian environment

The pedestrian environment and public realm in Weybridge is of mixed quality, issues include:

  • Insufficient footway width – areas are not easily accessible to some users (wheelchair or walking aid users, prams / buggy users)
  • Poor crossing provision – absence of dropped kerbs, no tactile material, insufficient pedestrian island width
  • Street clutter – guard railing and street furniture reduce footway width and create obstructions
  • Poor footway surface quality and patch-repairs

Collision data

Total number of collisions within the scheme extent were 64.

Of these 64 there were:
2 fatal (3%)
9 serious (14%)
53 slight (83%)Broken front bumper of black car after a colision

  • Overall, the scheme extent does not have a collision hotspot, though the majority occur on the A317
  •  Both collisions resulting in fatal injuries occurred near each other on the Balfour Road stretch of the A317
  • Both caused by driver disobedience of marked signs and pedestrian crossing points
